Chatham is one of the Medway towns in Kent, situated in the Medway unitary authority. The town originally developed around the army barracks and Chatham dockyard, which closed down in 1984. There is an inner ring road running through the town centre, and a flyover opened in 1989 to carry traffic over the high street.
